Biking.ie Work Experience- Day 4

Thursday 9th February

Another great day up in Ballinastoe with Biking.ie! Today was a “workshop” day in the cabin a few bikes needed some small work done headsets brakes and the likes.

Then two new shiny trek hardtails arrived in from Centro Ireland and had to be built up so I set out to work on them. After I had them built and tuned up I tended to my own bike witch needed some TLC.

Stripped it down and gave it a good cleaning from the inside out which hasn’t been done since during the race season last year. I put it back together oiled and greased it and tuned the brakes and gears, tightened the nuts, bolts, spokes and cables it was ready to go for another few months on the trails.

After all the riding over the last few days we decided to give the bikes a rest for today and stayed indoors organising and getting prepared for the events in the coming weeks. Bring on the Blitz!

Work Experience with Biking.ie- Day 3

Wednesday 8th February

Day tree with Biking.ie in Ballinastoe. The morning started nice and early with a bike rental, one of many through out the week once we sent the customer off on his trek 4500 for the day. After that we put on our biking gear, ready for a recky spin with the mountain bike legend himself Connor Campbell from Revolution Cycles Newry.

We were heading out to check out some possible runs for Round One of the Gravity Enduro taking place this April. After we got back we were off again for a quick lap of the Biking Blitz course around Ballinastoe to finish off our day of riding.

Then it was out to the rental bikes to finish off replacing the remainder of headsets on the bikes . All of a sudden darkness set in and  Niall and I found ourselves in the cabin, in darkness doing the last few bites but due to our world class mechanical skills we finished off all the bikes at ease!

Work Experience with Biking.ie- Day 2

Tuesday 7th February

Hey guys so day two has come upon us, well where do I start the day was “So Epic”!!! First off when I rolled up this morning we were straight onto the computers until lunch time getting this years Biking Blitz and Gravity Enduro up and running and out on the web , writing articles and putting up posts on all the sites.

After a bite to eat Niall and I pulled on our biking gear filled our bottles grabbed our bikes and hit the trail! Over the last year Niall has been telling me to ride a savage trail the top of Ballinastoe, he’s been telling me for months about singletrack, savage climbs and unthinkable descents! So today was the day to find out what all the hype was about I was “So Stoked“. Well I don’t know how to describe it ? its jaw dropping , gut wrenching it’s the best trail I have ever ridden , and i've ridden a lot of trails ! I cant wait to give it a lash again “its So Sick“.

After our cold windy ride on the road back to base we got cleaned up and sat down for some well deserved lunch . When in walks Nialls brother Gaz and his mate Richie , the guys were “So Stoked” after their spin where Richie was trying out his new bike “its so dialled“! I cant wait for another day with the guys at Biking.ie tomorrow!

Work Experience with Biking.ie- Day 1

Aaron Mc Cann from Co. Louth here I am up doing my work experience with Biking.ie for the week! I am an all round cyclist in Cuchulainn C.C. but mountain biking is my main focus in the sport , in the last tree years I’ve raced Mountain Biking races all over the country and as of last year my first international race at the Roc D’azur in the south of France . I’m looking into a Biking career in the future so here at Biking.ie it’s perfect! I will be keeping you updated with my day to day adventures throughout the week!

Monday 6th February
I made my way up to Ballinastoe Co. Wicklow to Biking.ie HQ and met up with Niall Davis where we discussed our plan for the week over a cup of tea. After our discussion and general biking chit chat we headed out on the bikes to check out the race loop for The Biking Blitz in two weeks time, had a great time out on the trails talking about guiding, lessons and everything else that goes with the job ! Stopped a few times for some trail maintenance which has to be done to keep the place in top condition for the many other riders using the trails.

We ended our spin in the new Trail head where we both used the great facilities ran by Biking.ie cleaned down the bikes and checked them over to make sure they were ready for the next spin. After we got cleaned up and had lunch it was out to the rental bikes for some servicing, today’s job was to replace all the headsets on the fleet of over thirty Trek hardtails!

After the first few Niall and I got into a good system were tipping away like a small dumper! And time wasn’t long flying by until the end of the day. I even got myself my very own world famous Biking.ie T-shirt for the rest of the week , I hear they very hard to get your hands on and only a select few have one to their name!

Family Forest Fun Day- Tibradden

The Family Forest Fun Day was held in Tibradden Forest in the Dublin Mountains on the 18th of September 2011.  With a near constant stream of riders around a short technical course, the future looks good for mountain biking in Ireland as kids as young as five proved to be up to the task of riding see saws, limbo poles, a short technical rooty descent and a steep climb at the recent Family Forest Fun day. For more information on these events keep an eye on the www.biking.ie events calendar.
